Outside stimuli sensory register working memory long-term memory forgotten. Working memory response (behavior) or permanently lost: start with outside stimuli- we are being inundated with information. Lots of stuff coming in right now; sight, sound, weather, feel arm against chair: sensory register- nothing stays there for long; about a second. You can only process one at a time, you cannot multitask. From sensory register to working memory it is attention: you don"t multitask, you switch from one thing from another. As teachers, we need to learn how to get and hold someone"s attention: working memory- where conscious thought happens. Stores information for only a short period of time. The weak link in our ability to process information. How to get short-term memory into long term: Rehearsal- saying something over and over again to try to remember. If you don"t get information from working memory into long-term memory, it becomes permanently lost: long-term memory- very large.
