Document Summary

August 25 2016: environment, reinforcement/punishment, personality and beliefs, coercive cycle = child starts to have power/control over parents, extinction = extinguishing reinforcement. Getting a bad behavior to go away: change reinforcement/punishment to improve development. *note: positive refers to adding something (mathematical, not necessarily good ) Positive reinforcement = when, as a consequence of a behavior, we are adding something the child wants/likes to the environment: ex: attention, candy, allowance, stickers, affection. Positive punishment = adding something to the child"s environment that they don"t like: ex: chores, corporal punishment (spanking), verbal aggression. Negative punishment = taking something away that the child likes: ex: timeout (when used correctly, the child is put somewhere that is extremely boring, removing child"s good stimulus) Negative reinforcement = a bad stimulus is removed from the child"s environment: ex: a parent stops yelling at/nagging the child after he/she"s finally done what you"ve been wanting.
