Nutrients are compounds found in foods that sustain your body processes. 6 classes of nutrients are all essential in diet to maintain bodily function: macronutrients- energy yielding nutrients needed in higher amounts. Carbohydrates, lipids (fats), and proteins: micronutrients- needed in smaller amounts. Vitamins and minerals: water- copious amounts needed daily for hydration. Kilocalories (calories)- from the macronutrients are used as energy during process of metabolism: carbohydrates provide 4 calories per gram, fats provide 9 calories per gram, protein provides 4 calories per gram. Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins provide energy: carbohydrates supply glucose the major fuel source for the body, fats are also a fuel source.
