Parsimonious definition: a state in which the demands of the environment exceed the resources of the individual. Some people are generally better/worse than others at coping with stress. Pessimistic explanatory style (not good for coping) Big five: high neuroticism linked to poor health but not so bad when linked with high. These personality factors operate in both stressful and non-stressful situations conscientiousness. Optimists: have better overall health, are active problem solvers, seek social support, keep sense of humor, reframe things positively, are persistant. Pessimists: do self-destructive things, have shorter life expectancy, ruminate on the negative, can be more hostile towards others. Type a personality: competitive, impatient, easily angered, sense of time urgency, high standards, ambitious: none of these are unhealthy except hostility.
