Document Summary

There are more deaths by shooting in the south than the north. Descriptive statistics = a snapshot at one moment. There are more deaths by shooting in small cities in the south compared to the north but there is little to no difference in big cities. Aspects of southern culture that could have led to these differences: Higher rates of poverty in the south. Hot climate (more people out and more irritated) History with slavery (solve problems with violence) Homicide rates within the south are lower in moist plains (agricultural history, good for growing crops) and higher rates in hills and dry plains (history of herding) Poverty and temperature are similar in moist plains and hills and dry plains. The moist plains has a greater history of slavery than the hills and dry plains (the reverse was expected) The only explanation for the south being more violent than the north is the history of herding.
