Western cultures value factual knowledge, tries to measure g, ex: ppl that do well on verbal tests tend to also do better on spatial reasoning tests. Different cultures define intelligence in different ways. Intelligence quotient (iq) test- st&ard testing of intelligence. Intelligence- ability to learn from experience, solve problems, & adapt to situations. He identified 7 clusters of mental abilities: intelligence is like athletics. He tried coming up w/ a way to identify students who might need special teaching: binet started by assuming that ppl develop in a step-by-step manner, if student is slow at younger stage of development. They"re mental age chronological age: stanford professor lewis terman believed we could place a number on intelligence, in 1800s, idea that only smart & strong ppl should be allowed to reproduce. Eugenics : immigrants had lower iq tests discrimination, modern tests of mental abilities, achievement tests- how much you"ve learned so far.
