(google withdrew from market in 2010, and now china instead linked to hong kong based servers) What is censored in china is anything that suggests collective action. Ngo"s provide social services such as health services, education, and poverty alleviation. Also includes advocacy groups for environmental protection, workers rights, etc. April-june: protesters occupy tiananmen square in peking, mostly students (50,000-100,000) Early may: dialogue between student leaders, general secretary zhao ziyang. May 20th: hard liners in ccp around premier li peng and deng xiaoping prevail, declaration of martial law, premier zhao ziyang removed from office. June 4th: peoples liberation army enters the city, and they use fire to clear the square.
