Essentialism: gender is a basic, unchangeable characteristic that stems from biological differences & resides within the individual: evolutionary perspective, similarities perspective. Social constructionism: differences between sexes stem from social (gender) roles that lead to differences in behavior: defined by time, culture, identity. Prescriptive norms: should do (warm, kind, interested in children, loyal, sensitive, friendly, clean, attentive to appearance) Proscriptive norms: should not do (rebellious, stubborn, controlling, cynical, promiscuous, arrogant) Ex: women are punished more harshly for neglecting children than men are. Third gender systems: intermediate state between men & women, both (spiritually, neither, crossing or swapping genders. Some cultures view this as negative & others positive. Native american: berdache (not male or female, intermediate, valued for spiritual gifts.
