The goal of the scientific method is to discover the truth/to seek the true causes of human behavior. Authority: accepting as true what is told to us by a person in power or a person who is assumed to have greater understanding i. e) gov"t officials, religious figures, newspapers, books, etc. They may have their own motivations for getting you to believe things that are not true. As the access of media increases, trust in institutions has been falling. Relying on authoritive figures to find truth is problematic. Example: obama"s comment on health care and everyone being able to keep their provider, which ended up being a false statement. Intuition: knowledge that arrives through instinctive feelings that conscious reasoning (gut). You may have motivation to convince yourself of things that aren"t true, there are important questions for which we likely have no intuitive answer to. i. e) upton sinclair quote it"s difficult [ ] Introspective: intuition guided by reason, what philosophers do.
