Fcollege educated women are waiting longer to have children. Measure: avg life expectancy - variable (changes) Acute diseases - sickness that comes on suddenly & strongly, easily transmitted. Japan - 83/84 yrs old (87 for women) How long someone lives is about social class. Work/job, education, money = composite variable = social class. Infant mortality - death in 1st year. Neonatal infant mortality - death 28 days. Post-neonatal infant mortality - death after 28 days - 12th month. Maternal mortality - up to 42 days after birth. Child mortality - death b/w 1-5 years. Use of midwives: us less than 8% - japan & europe over 70% Us has second worst newborn death rate in the developed world. Argument - we have different/high risk women. Not about women but how we take care. Midwives portrayed of the old country - dirty, ignorant ~ hospital - clean ~ reality more dangerous - never seen real birth till they graduated.
