NRSC 277 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Encephalitis, Spatial Memory, Motor Learning
Document Summary
An experience dependent process of obtaining knowledge and acquiring info; process of storing info. Memory - a process of retrieving stored info; the storage of retrievable info; retrieving the acquired info. Several similarities between experience dependent brain develop and learning. Similar mechanisms at different times and in different cortical areas. Memories range from stated facts to ingrained motor patterns. Anatomy : several memory systems; evidences are from brain lesion. Long term - long; one day and more. Working memory - a form of short term memory. Reference memory - always have on back burner of mind, long term memory form. Declarative - facts and events; medial temporal lobe (diencephalon) Important for consolidation and storage of declarative memories. Demonstrated by electrical stimulation in the temporal lobe and neural recordings from the temporal lobe. Different functional memories: motor skill, verbal, location (places, directions), emotion Amnesia: serious loss of memory and or ability to learn.
