Douglas"s (1984) most recent work on food gives clear indication of what: a clear connection between food categories and social complexity. Hierarchy and strength of intergroup distinction are by no mean the only frameworks for distinguishing between groups. Other forms of social differentiation exist, and differences in political, economic, and ideological power lead not only to differential access to foods but also to differential ability to control the definition of what is good to eat.
