Processes by which we come to understand other people. We like reality tv because we are social creatures (we like to be voyeurs) and we like to make sense of other people"s lives. Synthesize information to form an impression of another person . The very first time you see someone, what is your first impression. As early as 3 or 4 (or younger) year olds start using physical appearance to understand what people are like. A special thing we pay attention to. Because human beings have a special orientation to other human faces. (if cognitive psych: the face module: we can recognize faces really well) So facial expressions are like the holy grail. Darwin said there is some evolutionary reason: humans (prehistoric being) to communicate before there was language. Some facial expressions have survival values (prehistoric) Being able to detect anger/fear was more important to survive than being able to detect happiness.
