BSC 422 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Cervical Cancer, Muscle Atrophy, Cachexia
Clinical Course, Screening and Diagnosis
Clinical Course is based on Multiple Factors
• Fast growing/ slow growing
• Aggressive, invasive / circumscribed
• Mean and median survival times
• Cure rates
• Eventual cause of death
o Cachexia
▪ Wasting syndrome that occurs in cancer patients, patient goes into
weight loss, muscle atrophy, intense fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite;
not treatable with extra nutrients; about 50% of all cancer patients have
this; terminal cancer cases about 80% of people have this wasting
syndrome
• Tumor necrosis factor (Cachexin)
o Loss of function
o Infection
Cancer Screening
Is it worth the cost?
• Some of the test are very expensive, equipment is not always widely available, false
posities say they hae aner hen they atually don’t or false negatives (do have
aner ut says you don’t, Most insuranes ont pay for sreenings
• Screening: Best Case
o Detect cancer before it causes symptoms
o Have effective treatment available
o Easy to do
o Inexpensive
o Very sensitive
▪ Detects small localized cancers
▪ Low false negatives
o Specific
▪ Screen only yields positive when cancer is present
▪ Low false positives
o Noninvasive
▪ No or minor side effects
• Next best
o Detects increased probability of cancer
o Leads to effective monitoring or treatment
• Frequently detected
o Cancer detected because it causes symptoms
▪ Lump
▪ Change in normal processes
