CJ 421 Lecture 15: CJ 421 Notes 03-01-2017
Document Summary
Where have we been: last time we finished looking at some things that can be left behind - trace evidence. Today we are going to turn to another way that evidence might be left behind: impressions. We will start by looking at shoes and tires. Trace evidence is class evidence and predominantly exclusionary. Class evidence - you can narrow down the evidence down to a specific class. From dust to snow, visible or not. It will have a particular, individuating characteristics. Ex: nicking your shoe on the curb, leaving a distinct marking on your shoe that doesn"t belong to anyone else; the way people"s shoes wear over time. We will use these characteristics to figure out the specific tool or object we"re looking for. Comparative microscopy is a largely comparative technique. Sometimes the evidence is apparent (ex: bloody shoe print in the snow) Sometimes they are really hard to capture.
