Doing issue stories takes time, so you need your editor to agree your topic is worth the time. And you will need your lab instructor to approve your topic for story no. That"s what a story pitch is for. Persuade your editor (and lab instructor) that your issue is important, impactful or distinctive. Background/explanation (why are things the way they are?) Using real people as examples increases impact of the story. Ask sources not just about the problem, but about possible solutions.
