MC 101 Lecture 7: Media Effects and Law
Document Summary
Correlation is a statistical term describing relationships between variables. As in: media consumption and belief in the mean world syndrome are correlated - as consumption increases, so does belief in a mean word. You should be familiar with: framing as selection and emphasis of information about events. Spiral of silence: people are unwilling to share opinions that they assume are unpopular. Effect intensifies as it spirals because of growing number of people who are silenced. People fear punishment, such as isolation, if they share unpopular opinions. Effects are highly dependent on individual factors. People often rely on media to gauge popularity of opinions. Agenda setting explains what topics need opinions. Social cognitive theory has been used to explain many research findings. Ex: teens watching sexually explicit tv content and intentions to have sex. Media can silence what might be popular or intelligent opinions. Established as social learning theory albert bandura. Can take place by observing a behavior and its consequences.
