Communication - the process of creating shared meaning. Process - create - shared meaning and cultural definition. Group - only one person really talks at a time, to a group. Mass - using a mass medium to send a message to a large audience for a specific purpose. You need a channel or device or media to communicate. Media = mediated = to go between. A channel, device, or media is an extension of a human. Mass com has little (or different) feedback than other types of communication. One thing is a medium, it is singular. Media is not one thing, it is plural. Mass media helps provide society"s dominant culture. Transmission model - trying to understand how messages work. Shamon taught us how to measure information. A source sends a message over a channel to a receiver. How close are the sender and receiver in creating shared meaning.
