Analysis understands that the unconscious shapes behavior and still have a role now. For dreams: patient says dreams and free associates for it, helps get us things that are unconcious. Analysis wants this to happen because it tells the patient that he is carrying the past into the present. This has to happen in order for psychoanalysis to occur.
