Document Summary

Steroid hormones are able to exert there function on specific cells through receptors. Certain cells have the receptors for that hormone and upon binding it sets of a signaling cascade leading to the change desired. Some hormones like steroid hormones diffuse through the membrane into the cell and once inside bind to shrs and then start the signaling cascade inside, not from the outside. The adrenal glands are endocrine glands in that they lack ducts and secrete their products directly into the bloodstream. Examples include estrogen which is important for female sexual development. Another one is progesterone which is important for pregnancy and menstruation in females. They also produce mineralocorticoids which have huge effects on salt and water balance in us and this in turn regulates blood pressure. They also produce androgens for male sexual development and glucocorticoids such as cortisol for stress response and metabolism.
