Conformity (continued: the downside of conformity. Experiment held in the basement of stanford university psychology building, area made to look like prison. Student volunteers randomly assigned as either a prisoner or a guard, with no specific guidelines about what to do. After a while, even with no written rules, the prisoners began to act more like prisoners (depressed), guards began to act more like guards (abusive) Supposed to be a 2 week study, but was stopped after 6 days because so severe: more on zimbardo. One of the most well known social psychologists. Soldiers began to not follow authoritative orders so much, but began to make their own norms. Evil is often what good people do when the situation shapes their behavior. The power of the situation can overwhelm most people.
