Document Summary

Heuristics: a heuristic is a quick procedure that helps nd answers to dif cult questions. Substitution: in substitution, system 1 answers one question in place of another. Heuristic: which candidate looks more competent: if a satisfactory answer to the hard target question isn"t found quickly, system 1 answers an easier one instead. Intensity matching: system 1 can translate answers and match intensity across dimensions. The mental shotgun: system 1 is constantly making basic assessments about the world, which it has on hand, but system 1 is bad at giving only relevant answers; its a mental shotgun. Unjusti ed intuitions: intensity matching and the mental shotgun explains why we have intuitions about things we know little about. System 1 is constantly making basic assessments. When asked a dif cult question, system 1"s mental shotgun brings up an associated question and answer. Then system 1"s intensity matching expresses the answer in the right domain.
