There is no one way to define family correctly. The family that raised us, that we came out of. Can be biological but does not have to be (adoptive/foster family) Having kids, making close friends like family. Cohesion: the emotional bond among family members. Shows up in: how much time you spend together, how you use space in the home (shared/separate spaces) A lot of individuality, lot of autonomy, not very close with family members. No individuality, total loyalty to the family. Separated- low to moderate amount of cohesion. Some identification with the family, but autonomy is valued just a little bit more. Some individuality and autonomy, but the closeness and connection with family is valued a bit more than individuality. Adaptability: the ability to change power structure, role relationships, and relational rules in response to stress. If family member is added or taken away, or one got sick a family needs to adapt to this stresser.
