Close relationships come in many different forms, friends, family, romantic partners. Communication is what helps us develop and sustain this closeness. Physical proximity- physical contact, sitting near each other, hugging, touching, etc. A sense of shared experiences; trust, concern, enjoyment being with partner. Sharing (opening up, self-disclosure, want to share info) and caring (being there for other) A relationship that has some interdependence; the more your lives overlap. Influence thoughts, behaviors, emotions of each other. We develop these closenesses by being affectionate. Ex. hugging, kissing, hand holding, saying i love you. Engaging in these kinds of behavior help your physical and emotion/mental health. *not to say all affection all the time-- affection paradox- too much affection can repel partners. Love is like a triangle, it is made up of three components. Intimacy: the warm part of love-- sharing, communicating, caring, emotional connection with partner. Passion: physical attraction and arousal towards partner, infatuation.
