Document Summary

The positive social value a person effectively claims for himself [or herself] by the line others assume he [or she] has taken during a particular contact (goffman, 1967, p. 5) How you want to be perceived in some situations may be different than how you want to be perceived in other situations. Ex: be creative, be smart, self - sufficient, member of group. When engaged in social interaction, you are likely concerned with face. What you say & how you respond face. Can also help others with their face. If i feel like someone is threatening my neg face, I"m saying i feel they are restricting my autonomy. My free will, independence is being restricted. *when speaking, the messages that i send can be threatening to my positive or negative face. Or it can be threatening to the other person"s pos or neg face. Ex: i don"t like what you are wearing. Threatens both your own & others" positive face.
