Document Summary

Nonverbal communication impacts over half on the message. Nonverbal communication can occur with or without words. Nonverbal communication is often spontaneous & unintentional. Ex: crying - could mean you are happy or sad, depending on the situation. People tend to believe nonverbal communication over verbal communication. Because people tend to have less control over nonverbal. See it as a more reliable indicator of truth. Understanding nonverbal messages in profession settings requires knowledge of sender"s frame of reference. Culture influences how nonverbal communication is used & interpreted. Cultures(ex:latin america, italy, medditeranean area) that rely more on touch. Women engage in more eye contact & pay more attention to verbal & nonverbal cues. Women tend to interpret & send nonverbal cues better than men. This is a cultural difference, not necessarily a biological difference. Ex: taking food off of husband"s plate. Prof will do this at home, but not in public. Ex: will behave differently at pub vs. fancy restaurant.
