Independence hypothesis economic freedom: gender roles, individualism people less connected to others than used to be. Less affected by community norms that may discourage them from divorcing: demanding more out of spouses, sex ratio. Men more likely to cheat, women outnumber men. Men have more alternatives: perceptions of divorce.
