Topic 1: simultaneous political and economic reform, comparison of russia and poland. Gdp has been increasing for both countries throughout the years. Mandated that the country adopt a constitution that is foundational for a democracy. Russia: international price and demand (related services ex. extraction) of oil/natural gas. Good for growth but not for democracy. If the price of oil/natural gas decline, russia will be very vulnerable. Will have to change its economic basis or will fall into economic decline. A new model: democracy, market, and eu institutions. But a much more realistic way of transforming a country from a non democracy to a democracy. Prosperity results from the combination of political and economic competition. Institutional basis for european style political economy is complicated. Bc the forces of control of the economy and the political system are the same. So long as state revenue from sale of natural resources is high enough, economic development occurs.
