Document Summary
An example of the breadth of psychology- processing of faces. Face processing is relevant for every unit. Unit 1 - the science of psychology: themes, methods, & biological underpinnings. Studying the mind is similar to how you study gravity. You can look at the effects the mind has. This shows that babies can store faces in memory. Known face is not as interesting as the new, unknown one. Function can be seen with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fmri) Fusiform face area- is a specific part of the brain that processes faces. It is much more active when looking at faces than when looking at houses etc. No- the area processes any information in which the individual has a high degree of expertise. Example- someone who is an expert in cars can tell subtle differences between cars using the fusiform face area. Unit 2- building blocks of the mind: perception, learning, & memory.
