Positivity and negativity reflect different valences: positive emotions: enthusiasm, joy, and love, negative emotions: anger, anxiety, guilt, sadness, etc, emotions are influenced by biology as well as by experience. Environmental influences: biological evolution has endowed humans to be emotional, but culture and relationships provide for diversity in emotional experiences (e. g. ) You can think about how parents regulate negative emotionality in their children. If (cid:455)ou(cid:396) goal is diffe(cid:396)e(cid:374)t, if (cid:455)ou"(cid:396)e not sure what you want to do, if this is really the major for you, then you might experience that poor grade a bit differently. It might put you on a path on evaluating whether this major is right for you, it might make you think a little differently about your career goals. Emotional competence: focuses on the adaptive nature of emotions, elements of emotional competence, perceiving and expressing emotions accurately, understanding emotions, processing emotional knowledge, using feelings to facilitate thought, managing emotions effectively.
