May people do not count things officially as psychological disorders in their own understanding of mental illness. About 1 in 7 around the world have a mental illness at any given time. May be a minority but is a huge number of people. Why may not know someone with a mental illness: *we need to treat those with physical & mental illnesses equal -> equally as debilitating. Lack of understanding of what a mental illness even is. Embarrassment or reluctance to share with others when experiencing symptoms of mental illness. Mental illnesses not treated the same as physical illness. Harder for people to share that they have mental illness than physical illness -> may not be taken as seriously. In general, afraid of being judged for having mental illness. Psychopathology basically means the study of psychological disorders/abnormal psychology. How society thinks about causes of psychopathology have changed over time.
