Prescribed medications or medical procedures that act directly on the patient"s nervous system. Goal bring repressed feelings into conscious awareness so patient can deal with them. Patient says whatever comes into their head in an uncensored manner. Thoughts may be childhood memories, dreams, recent experiences. The analyst usually sits out of patient"s view. They make jokes or try to change the subject. Analyst notes resistances, dream meanings, or other significant behavior and events in order to promote insight. The patient"s transfer to the analyst of emotions linked with other relationships. Gives the patient a chance to work through that relationship. Patient falls in love with analyst and trust develops. When sensitive material comes up so therapy becomes challenging.
