BIOL 171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 34: Mammography, Lymphedema, Malignancy
Document Summary
Primary signs of breast cancer on mammography: common: Irregular (spiculated), high-density mass: clustered pleomorphic microcalcifications, focal distortion. Less common: focal asymmetric density, developing density. Secondary signs of breast cancer on mammography: common, nipple or skin retraction, skin thickening, lymphedema pattern (swollen skin; edema=swelling) Risk factors for breast cancer: 10 risk factors for breast cancer, age, genetic mutations, family history, late menopause, liver disease, late pregnancy, radiation, changes in hormones, stress , obesity * Young patients with dense breasts: fibroadenoma, lateral edge shadow, well defined walls, will not disturb the architecture (layers of the breast - subcutaneous, mammary and retro) Patient with breast augmentation: chronic seroma in a patient with previous silicone implants that ruptured, saline implants: In a normal saline implant, it is a continuation of the pectoralis muscle. If it is ruptured, the saline will get absorbed in the tissues and the body. Used if the patient is more likely to get an irritation.
