Document Summary

Anatomy of the breast: modified sweat gland in the superficial fascia of anterior chest wall. Similarly to how we compare everything in the abdomen to the liver: breast parenchyma the tissue that is doing the function of lactation. Not a functional unit: breast of male and females are generally similar until puberty. Anatomy of the breast: 3 main layers, subcutaneous layer, mammary (glandular) layer, retromammary. Behind the breast: the 3 layers are located between the skin and the pectoralis major muscle on the anterior of the chest wall, muscle is retro; and is thus, not apart of the skin tissue in the breast. Subcutaneous layer: thin layer: fatty tissue, cooper ligaments - attaches one structure to another structure, echogenicity: hyperechoic (since it is fibrous connective tissue) Mammary layer: functional portion of the breast: 15 to 20 lobes. Retromammary layer: thin layer: cooper"s ligament, fatty tissue.
