Document Summary

What the enslaved hated most about slavery was not necessarily just the hard work to which they were subjected, but the lack of control over their lives--and their lack of freedom. Every aspect of enslaved life was controlled by the overseers or the owners. There was also sexual exploitation of the women. Domination is a complex negotiation between hegemony and coercion. Hegemony: making one who is being denominated agree, in part, to his or her domination. Accomodating to keep their lives and in order to have slightly better circumstances even while within the institution. How are we to understand the brutal suppression of the slave revolt on the plantation. In the last supper, the suppression of the revolt seemed completely disproportionate to the actual revolt. White solidarity is one of the things underappreciated in the film. How is that cemented and protected towards the end of the film. Resistance to slavery was built into the institution.
