Jim crow is a global system; creation of a global color-line; racial regime that"s modern, new, global. Consolidation of white supremacy on a global scale. Jim crow isn"t a backwards movement, but a modern movement that responds to the slavery and the new hierarchy based on race. Response to interracial and black led movements that tried to preserve democracy (voting rights, workers" rights) Former slave owners tried to reproduce forms of labor based on slavery. Stripped black people of voting rights and political power. Facilitated the theft of black-owned land, reducing formerly enslaved people to sharecropping and debt peonage. Imposed new forms of bondage-formally in terms of chain gangs and prison labor. Vagrancy laws to pick up black men and women who weren"t perceived to have any means of support. Chain gangs: using profanity in public, spitting, loitering, infanticide. Sanctioned the rape of black women by refusing any state protections for black women.
