Spoke french and are called walloon: northern part of belgium called the flemish. Bruges became a powerful trade city in flanders between the 12th and 15th century. Hanseatic ships could reach the city by channel. This channel started silting in the 15th century, antwerp became competitor city: hamburg & luebeck. Hamburg was located on the elbe river and close to the north sea, remains one of the most important harbor cities in the world: luebeck. Sometimes called the queen of the hanseatic league . South had the top of their churches onion shaped, while the north had pointy tops on their churches and the majority were protestant.
