Document Summary
Eeg (electroencephalography- chatter of neurons, 164 microphones on cap recording sounds inside brain. Lack of proper sleep hygiene (sleep deprivation) causes attentional/cognitive deficits. Rem- similar to awake state (low voltage, fast activity) Babies sleep so much because they need more rem sleep, spend about 50% of their time sleeping in this stage. People think babies sleep so much because they are learning a lot and need the memory consolidation. # descriptive research- real , but difficult to know causes. Ex) survey research/polls, correlational studies, case studies, naturalistic observation. # experimental research- events in a controlled or contrived setting. Look for pros and cons of each research approach. Pros: allows quantification of large sample very quickly, describes real attitudes or opinions (self-reported) that exist in nature even if people lie, that was the data collected and still counts. Cons: bias associated with self-report, some may lie for whatever reason, provides only descriptive results and not what caused them.
