The science of communication is looking at the patterns and general ideas that can help predict or understand communication at large. Ex: compared to many middle eastern cultures, americans stand far apart when they are conversing. Middle eastern cultures as related to american cultures; proximity of how far they stand apart during conversations. Ex: eye contact increased perceptions of attractiveness. Formulate hypotheses about the relationship between variables. Using logical reasoning and explanation testable predictions based on prior studies/theories/models. Have reasoning and explanations for why you expect what you expect; have a reasoned inference based on what has come before. Set the data collection process to control or remove personal biases, but researchers cannot be unbiased themselves. Researchers" findings are reported to and reviewed by scientific community. Purpose: examine relationships between communication attitudes, behaviors, etc.
