We have multiple ways to encode any message. For example, it"s difficult to be direct and polite at the same time. We don"t always have many goals; depends on the complexity of the situation. For some types of communication, there are few goals. When there are few goals, messages are constructed similarly. Goal: categorize the fundamental types of individual differences that exist in message creation. Stated a different way people prioritize goals differently and therefore design their messages differently. Language is a medium for expressing thoughts and feelings. Communication is successful to the extent that it is clear. The belief is that you should express that you think . Socially conventional rules and procedures are critical. Typically polite and adhering to the norm focus on future goal-related action. Focus on rights and obligations of the situation. Tailor communication carefully to address complex needs. Situational conditions are not givens"; they can be transformed we can work with the situation at hand.
