ESS 2 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Diuretic, Asthma, Theobromine
Document Summary
The buzz: increased alertness & concentration, feeling good. Too much & you get the jitters, agitation & anxiety. Overdose: fatal overdose is rare but possible. Caffeine poisoning: tremors, rapid heartrate, confusion, delirium, seizure, inability to breathe. Dangerous combos increase blood pressure, caution in cardiovascular conditions, high doses of cold medicine, stacking w/other stimulants, antidepressants. Withdrawal symptoms headache & fatigue mostly for 24-48 hours. Mild tolerance may be developed in response to some of the effects of caffeine. Everyone has a different tolerance to caffeine (some people think of the word coffee & can"t sleep) Another study: tolerance occurs in part b/c the brain quickly develops more adenosine receptors to compensate for those blocked by the caffeine molecule. By resetting or preventing caffeine tolerance, a dose of about 100-200 mg will produce the effects described above once again. The key is to avoid habitual caffeine consumption. Body vasodilates (opens up blood vessels) increases blood flow to body.
