Agenda : short introduction to philosophy - logic. We will be learning more precise ways to evaluate logic than logical / illogical. Logic is distinct from rhetoric ( the study of persuasive discourse : appeal to motion, appeal to anger ) Is a set of claims that one is supported by others e. g. 1. All humans are mortal: socrates is a human, so, socrates is mortal. Argument: structure : a more precise definition of argument . An argument is a connected series of sentences, statements, or propositions. (called. Premises ) that are intent to give a reason of some kind for a sentence, statement, or proposition. (called conclusion ) More than two premise : the reason given to support the conclusion. Conclusion : the claim that the argument is trying to establish ( the claim supported by the premises) Standard form : any argument where the premises occur in a numbered list, separated from the conclusion by a line.
