Document Summary

Producing , detecting and/or responding to singlas. A cellular structure, usually a protein, that responds to signal. In multicellular organisms direct connection allow cell coordination. Protein pore connection allow small molecules to diffuse cell to cell. Allow cell to cell communication in plants. Unicellular organisms communicate with neighbors and the environment. Slime mold amoeba aggregate in response to sending a quorum. Aggregated amoeba form a slug like body that crawls across surface. Polarity of a chemical signal determines receptor location. Nonpolar (lipid soluble) signals diffuses through the membrane to bind to intracellular receptors and then affect gene expression. Plasma membrane receptor for a polar signal. Endocrine signal travels a long distance through the bloodstream. Paracrine signaling - signaling lacks receptors, target cells are local. Autocrine signaling - cell receives its own signal. Juxtacrine - signaling is contact dependent, both signal and receptor are bound to the plasma membrane. Initial signal can be amplified to speed up cellular response.
