BISC208 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Loose Connective Tissue, Epithelium, Muscle Tissue
Document Summary
Animals are generally studied through the anatomy and physiology. Anatomy refers to the organism"s physical structure or form. Physiology is the study of how the physical structures in an organism function. Biologists who study animal anatomy and physiology study adaptations. Heritable traits that make individuals more likely to survive and reproduce in a certain environment better than individuals that lack those traits. Adaptation results from evolution by natural selection. Ex. elephants with alleles for large ears have a better chance to survive and produce more offspring that elephants with alleles for smaller ears. Adaptation is a genetic change in a population in response to natural selection exerted by the environment. Acclimation is a phenotypic change that occurs in an individual in response to environmental fluctuation. Similar to acclimation, which refers to changes that occur in an organism in a laboratory. Structure and function at cellular and molecular levels. Correlations between form and function begins at the molecular level.
