HIS 130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Natural-Born-Citizen Clause, Discrimination Based On Skin Color
Document Summary
Religion motivated some immigrants to travel to the us. Poverty wasn"t always the motivation to immigrate to the us. Transportation factored into immigration to the us- including steamship lines. Some immigration was the result of concerted efforts- ex: the british tried to encourage the irish to immigrate to canada rather than the us, claiming it was cheaper. The us wanted immigrants to speak english- one of the ways they tried to get immigrants to speak english was offering advanced classes in schools in only english. At this point, having citizenship wasn"t that important for immigrants- it would become more important around the time of the new deal, with the advent of social security and other benefits. Some claimed that chinese immigrants didn"t want to assimilate- further than that, the people making these claims (more likely than not) didn"t want them to assimilate)
