We all do- crime is a reality of modern life. Attention to crime traced back to babylon and code of hammurabi. Grounded in concept of deterrence and free will. 2 important developments: crime was no longer thought to be a product of religion, superstition, or myth, crime was seen as a result of free will. End of the dark ages and start of scientific revolution. Look towards the application of the scientific method. Looking for the identification of patterns and consistencies in observable facts. Human behavior is caused by factors specific to the individual. Lombroso is the most notable figure associated with determinism. Helped positivism replace the classical approach to crime in the 1920 s. Crime is a product of social ecology- specifically the disorganization of urban life- not an individual characteristic. Theory is an attempt for humans to make order out of the chaos that characterizes our lives.
