Document Summary

Can also have a membrane envelope around them which comes from the host cell they just infected; they don"t make their own membrane. They infect some cell that can do all that and steal what the cell makes; they are parasites in that sense. They have dna but don"t have a lot of enzymes and cannot carry out all the chemical transformation to make all the molecules to make viral progeny. They rely on cells that can make proteins for them. They take over the cell and tells it to make viral proteins. Viruses can infect any kind of cell (but one virus can only affect a certain range of cells) Can be a specific cell type rather than a specific species. An example is that flu viruses infects epithelial cells (line the surface of throat and lungs) and is more likely to impact a dog/duck/etc. throat than our liver cells.
