Apartheid: sa born from settler colonialism by british and dutch after wwi. Population ruled by white minority over black majority. Tensions were high between blacks, whites, and different economic groups. Led to 1948 election of national party; they established apartheid. Enforced separation through group registration acts, passbooks, and forced movement of blacks: anc revived as liberation struggle group; b/w tensions increase, increased black rebellion. Sa justified repressing anc b/c they were aligned with socialist and communists: sharpeville massacre (1960) Led to creation of armed wing of anc. Designated as terrorists by sa national party and us: mining drove sa economy; large gold and uranium reserves. Major uranium supplier to us and uk. Gold standard of gold-backed currency largely consisted of sa gold: uranium found in gold mines; became valuable after wwii and development of nukes. Us and sa scientific exchanges on how to extract uranium from the gold.
