When it was discovered that sv40 causes tumors when injected into rodents, people became very concerned that sv40 might cause cancer in the humans who had received the contaminated polio vaccine. Fifty-six years later, this is still a controversial topic in the virology field. Does cause disease if there"s a problem with their immune system. Increases telomerase activity - enzymes that maintain the length of telomeres which are at the end of your dna and enables the cell to keep dividing, which is why cancer cells have increased telomerase activity. Cancer cells do not grow faster, they just grow when they"re not supposed to be growing. Two group of proteins that either inhibit or increase cell growth. Most cancers have suppressor proteins that eliminate these two groups - if you get rid of the two proteins then there is no regulation, which is what cancers do.
