BIOLOGY 153 Lecture 1: Nat Selection post lab
Document Summary
Natural selection post lab: both of the islands started with two birds in each beak-size category. The lush island"s large- beak population flourished, increasing to seven, while the medium- and small-beaks decreased to one of each. The difference in the islands, and what caused the differences in population, is the size of the food available: the genetic drift experiment is still natural selection. It gives a more realistic view of what happens when determining the new frequencies of alleles in nature, only if the event is natural; tides, wind, etc. If the event is anthropogenic, then it becomes artificial selection. If the results were randomized under the same conditions regarding food size and climate then the outcome should be very similar to the original. Natural selection is still the main decider in the frequency of beak sizes because the seeds and climate are natural factors.
